I hated Episode 1, but 2 and 3 renewed my love of the Universe. Episode 1 flaws to me were in execution and acting. It feels like it was made for children. Way too many little side fart gags. Have a reptilian alien burp or do something funny, that's money in the bank, right? Annoying! The pod race was one third the movie. The acting was horrible. And Jar Jar was just insulting our intelligence. But your point of using that movie to bring in new viewers (probably expecting backlash from die hard, hard core fans and doing it anyway, knowing any offended viewers would come back later anyway: hey, it's Star Wars) is a good one.
Also, kudos for standing up for George Lucas. He created this universe and we've grown up in it and still watch it develop today. Why the hate, indeed. Please ignore my first paragraph.
And a question: for a non-public-aired subscription based podcast, do the blue words really have to be bleeped out?

Great discussion!
